I'm currently working on this study of an apple. I created the underpainting using the wipeout method. I covered the surface with raw umber and then tried to capture the different values of the composition by using a rag to carefully wipe across the surface. It helps if your drawing underneath has been gone over with a sepia pen so that you don't loose your drawing!
